Australian, 93, faces sexual assault charges
BANGKOK: -- A verdict in the case of a 93-year-old Australian man facing pedophile charges in northern Thailand is expected by December after prosecutors this week concluded their case against him.
Karl Joseph Kraus remains in custody after being rearrested on July 24 in the Burmese city of Pa-an, the capital of Karen state, after fleeing Thailand where he had been free on bail of 400,000 baht ($A12,900).
Kraus was returned to Thai authorities in early August. He had been living in a rented house in Pa-an when he was detained during a routine check of immigration and passport documents.
Legal sources said that during a hearing on Wednesday the court did not raise any fresh charges regarding Kraus's getaway to Burma.
"The court is pretty reluctant to (add fresh charges). They want to finish the case as quickly as possible. I doubt very much they will charge him with jumping bail," they said.

Phuket Police hunt serial masturbator
Phuket Gazette

Police have scoured Phuket Town nightclub car parks, but have come up empty-handed in apprehending the masturbating man. Photo: CCTV image
PHUKET: -- Phuket City Police are now searching for a man wanted for sexually harassing restaurant staff in Phuket Town after he exposed himself and masturbated in front of them four times in three days.
“We launched a search for him last night, but we have yet to find him. Our officers have been alerted to the car’s license plate number and have been searching areas around night entertainment venues,” Phuket City Police Superintendent Sermphan Sirikong told the Phuket Gazette today.
“We have caught a few people, parked along the bypass road, who were masturbating in their vehicles, but none of them were the man we are looking for,” he added.
The news follows a restaurant owner in Phuket Town making a public appeal yesterday for people to beware of a man who has repeatedly exposed himself in front of her Burmese staff and masturbated in front of them.
“It started on September 9, while we were preparing to close the restaurant. He pulled up in his car in front of the restaurant, opened the driver’s side window and started masturbating,” the restaurant owner told the Phuket Press Club yesterday.
There were two incidents involving the man masturbating in front of staff on September 10, she said.
“One of those times, he walked up to one of my staff members, pulled out his ‘thing’ and started masturbating right in front of her. When the staff member saw what he was doing and screamed, he ran back to his car and sped off,” she explained.
Staff at the restaurant described the masturbator as a well-dressed, good-looking Thai man in his 30s, driving a car fitted with Bangkok license plates bearing the number 7346.
The last time the man approached the restaurant was on September 11.
“My female workers were preparing to open the restaurant. According to the clock on our CCTV camera, he knocked on the door at 4:17am and asked if he could use our restroom, but then he pulled out his penis and started masturbating while still standing in the doorway,” the restaurant owner said.
“He had no clue he was caught by our CCTV,” she added.
One of the restaurateur’s Burmese staff members reported the man saying, “Don’t be afraid. Come with me, I will give you 500 baht.”
“He begged my workers to open the door. He said all this while still masturbating,” said the restaurateur.
“At 4:24am, my mother came back from the market. He saw her and then jumped in his car, which was still running, and drove away. That was the last time we saw him. I uploaded the CCTV photo onto my Facebook page that same day,” she added.
The restaurant owner said she had reported the incidents to Phuket City Police, but her complaint was not accepted, prompting her to give a public warning yesterday.
“We want the media to publish this man’s picture to warn women in Phuket to beware of him,” she said.
“I would also like employers who have female workers to watch out for him. We never know where he might turn up next,” she added
Sen Sgt Maj Suwit Yimsong, from the Phuket City Police radio room, said he could find no record of the restaurant owner filing a complaint.
“I was [previously] unaware of this issue, and I had not received any reports of similar disturbances from any other police stations in Phuket.
“Perhaps there was a misunderstanding. Police will investigate this, but they need the person who has been offended by the public indecency to file the complaint. Someone else cannot file a complaint like this on their behalf,” he explained.
Chalong Police told the Gazette that they, too, were unaware of the man’s antics. They have yet to determine whether or not he matches the description of either of the two men reported masturbating by the side of the road between Patong and Karon on August 19.

Washington Square Demolition Leaves Bangkok’s Elderly Sexpats Lost, Confused
3 Oct 2012

MID-SUKHUMVIT – Bangkok’s senior sex tourist population is facing its greatest crisis in decades as the demolition of the nightlife zone known as Washington Square has left them with nowhere to go.
Dozens, and sometimes up to a hundred portly Western men with bad skin, aged 55-80, have been reported wandering around the Sukhumvit Soi 22 area since June, when final eviction orders forced the closure of Washington Square bars and restaurants, many of which had been open since the 1980s.
Even as wrecking balls and bulldozers take down the six-story shophouses which have stood unchanged since the Vietnam War, many of the faithful patrons of the vanished drinking holes have remained, emerging around dusk to wander aimlessly amidst the wreckage of the only places in Bangkok outside their apartments where they feel comfortable.
“Where is Lone Star?” asked Melvin Summerville, a 68-year-old retiree from the United States. “I can’t find Lone Star. It’s supposed to be right here; it was right here,” he said over and over, pointing to pile of concrete rubble. When asked, Summerville said that he had been going to Lone Star for 16 years without ever going to another bar, and as such was unaware of where else he could get a beer.
When directed towards The Dubliner, a nearby Irish-themed pub, Summerville waved his hand in protest. “Can’t go in there,” he said. “There’s young people in there. And Thai women who have their own money. Can’t go in there, no way.”
He then joined a small group of about seven elderly Caucasian men who were standing silently in the street. Other groups were meandering nearby, perspiring visibly in the humid evening.
According to Thammasat University sociologist Nootaree Kampongrat, the refugee crisis was created by a “perfect storm” of variables, beginning with the unique status of the Washington Square real estate.
“The market value of the land surpassed the income from these cheap bars as early as 1993, but since the landowners wanted to sell the entire 20-rai plot as a single package rather than subdivide it, they had to wait for a buyer,” she said. According to Nootaree, this created what the real estate calls a “rent bog” where low-value businesses are permitted to continue in what otherwise should a be high-rent area.
“Washington Square has been living on borrowed time for 20 years, and so have these men,” she explained. “Meanwhile, they’ve been stuck in a capsule, getting older and even more entrenched in their habits.”
With rents unchanged since the 1970s, many of Washington Square’s bars were able to keep their drink prices artificially low, further isolating their patrons from the new and more upscale establishments that were springing up in the area. Additionally, the refusal of the landowners to upgrade any of the decrepit shophouses in Washington Square prevented the influx of any new businesses aimed at younger or more sophisticated customers.
Even the physical structure of the square was a factor, according to Nootaree. “Washington Square was literally walled off by darkness,” she noted. “It was similar to a cave ecosystem, where the indigenous species evolve in isolation, adapt to their bare resources, and eventually become a new species altogether.”
The possibility that the refugee patrons are suffering from a medical or psychiatric condition has caught the attention of the city government, which has sent in a team of doctors and a medical bus to provide basic services to the estimated 450 bar-less men, who have been reported to be suffering from dehydration, disorientation, and early signs of age-related dementia.
“These people need to be treated as patients,” said Dr Janapat Ruenpongrat, a psychologist on the team who has interviewed and treated many of the victims. “Most of them are 60 years or older, and almost all of them have never eaten or drank outside Washington Square or the Emporium since, well, last century. They’ve lost everything and they’re scared.”
Dr Janapat insisted that medical treatment was a short-term solution at best, and that these deeply sheltered sex tourists would need months of rehabilitation before being able to navigate a modern city like Bangkok on their own.
“They don’t speak Thai. Heck, they barely speak English,” she noted, referring to the truncated pidgin-English used by long-term expats who communicate exclusively with female bar employees and motorcycle taxi drivers.
“Also, they’re kind of poor,” she added. “I mean, just look at their shoes.”
Responding to the crisis, Bangkok Governor Sukhumband Paribatra has promised to quickly find new places for the refugees to drink, carouse, and feel unthreatened by anything new, with sois 22 and 9 being vetted as prime candidates.
“Bangkok is better equipped than any city in the world to serve old white men who are uncomfortable with the wider world,” he said. “We are world leaders in providing economically desperate Asian women and unhealthy Western food. As governor I promise that these men will be taken care of.”
“They will live in Bangkok until they die. I promise you that much.”

Grisly killings in Bangkok
The Nation
BANGKOK: -- Police yesterday uncovered two grisly killings - in one case a wife beheaded her bedridden spouse and in the other a husband slashed and stabbed his wife to death in a jealous rage. In the first case, Bang Khun Non police detained Pornsuree Deepaew, 36, on suspicion of beheading her husband Prasit Seesomboonyanon, 47, who suffered paralysis for the past two years.
Alerted by a security guard at an apartment building in Bangkok Noi, police found a plastic bag with a male body inside minus the head and with its hands and right foot missing. A team of police divers later retrieved the victim's head from a nearby pond.
Witnesses said Pornsuree had acted suspiciously since Saturday night, when she abruptly told the apartment management to end her lease. Early yesterday morning, she went out to buy several plastic bags for packing in her room.
She was then seen to throw one of the bags into the pond. She later asked security guard Sayan Nualphya to help her move some bags to the hall to await final disposal. But the suspicious nature of the bags caused him to call police.
At the time of her arrest, the suspect appeared delusional, which prompted police to put her in quarantine before evaluating if she is fit to give a statement. Police investigators believe she may have committed the murder because of drug-induced delusion or a cult. Pornsuree told police she was the medium of a deity.
In the second case, Pathum Wan police went to investigate an incident of domestic violence and discovered the murder. Neighbours reported a fight between murder suspect Chanchai Winakorn, 29 and his wife and victim Saichon Kongkaew, 31.
Police found Saichon with her throat slashed and body with 14 knife wounds. Chanchai was nearby with serious injuries - a slash wound to the neck and a stab in the abdomen. At his side were two suicide notes. One was written by the victim, voicing her willingness to die with her husband, while Chanchai wrote a vow to die to end his wife's affairs.

Thailand is experiencing an unfortunate epidemic of young women posting photos of their breasts on Facebook pages simply to garner attention and “likes” from boys.
Whether this is actually a new development in the usage of Facebook is up for debate.
The women, many of them teenagers studying in high school, post the revealing photos on pages devoted to the practice, where some have amassed over 400,000 “likes” on the social network, KomChadLuek reported.
Many girls have their mobile cameras ready to upload salacious images instantly at any hour – then they sit back and watch as the “likes,” “shares,” and comments to build up.
Here’s a smattering of the captions these voyeuristic vamps have written for their boob shot uploads:
“Please consider my picture, but leave no comment if you think my breasts aren’t beautiful.”
“My boobs may be small, but I am very lustful.”
“I want to show my breasts, but not my name.”
“I’m not beautiful, but I still want someone to click ‘like’ for me.”
Thailand’s Ministry of Culture, unsurprisingly, is not impressed and is investigating whether the images can be qualified as obscenity and illegal. The Minister warned parents who buy smartphones for their kids to keep an eye on them, lest they end up in prison or a dangerous situation.
Meanwhile, the director of the Department of Mental Health said that many teenage ladies are posting the photos for acceptance and don’t understand the danger and immorality of the act. He urged women considering photos of their breasts online to “think twice” before they do, because it can cause more harm than good.

German Seeks Runaway Thai Wife For Son's Sake

A 42-year-old German man is looking for his missing Thai wife, who deserted him and their 1-year-old son five months ago. She needs to sign a document stating he is the biological father, so he can bring his son to Germany. He has spent a 10 million THB inheritance and is almost broke.
BANGKOK-October 10, 2012[PDN]; in the evening, a Channel 3 television reporter was approached by a German man, Mr. Stephan Wagner, age 42, who was carrying his 1-year-old son.
Mr. Stephan asked if the reporter could help him find his Thai wife, who deserted the family five months ago. He needed to locate his missing wife to sign a guarantee that he is really the father of their son, so he can bring his son back to Germany.
Mr. Stephan said he used to be a rescue officer in Germany, but six years ago he came to live in Thailand with his ailing grandfather who was seeking a cure for his illness. When his grandfather died, Mr. Stephan received an inheritance of more than 10 million THB.
But Mr. Stephan didn’t return to Germany because he loved Thailand, with its good weather and much cheaper cost of living compared to Germany. Then Mr. Stephan got to know a Thai woman named Ketsarin, age 25.
So they lived together for a year, and had a son. During that time, Mr. Stephan used the money from his inheritance to build a new house, and when his wife got pregnant, he bought a car and many consumer products to use in their daily life.
But about five months after his wife gave birth, she disappeared without any trace, and left their son and the birth certificate. So Mr. Stephan began caring for his son with the help of his Thai mother-in-law, until he used up almost all of his money.
After he ran out of money, his mother –in-law expelled him from the house. So Mr. Stephan took his son and began trying to find his wife in Pattaya, because he thought that his wife might be staying there, but he still did not find any trace of her.

Mozambique woman caught with drugs in Phuket
The Nation
PHUKET: -- A Mozambique woman was caught smuggling in six kilograms of methamphetamine worth Bt21 million at Phuket International Airport, police said yesterday.
Customs officers randomly checked arriving passenger Hortencia Ferreira Novela, 37, and the X-ray of her black suitcase found suspicious items. They opened the baggage and found a hidden purple briefcase containing two plastic bags filled with yaba. The bags were wrapped in carbon paper and clear tape.
Novela left Mozambique by Kenya Airways to connect to flights at Nairobi in Kenya, Doha in Qatar and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to reach Phuket. The suspect said she was hired for Bt50,000 to deliver the briefcase to someone at Patong Beach in Kathu district. It was her first time to visit the resort island.
Police are tracking down her contact by tracing calls on her mobile phone, which records show she used many times to complete her work.
Customs Department director-general Bencha Luicha-roen said the department has enforced policies to control and suppress the illicit drug trade by ordering its Phuket airport officials to conduct strict inspections. -

Lead paint found in BMA schools
The Nation
BANGKOK: -- Paints containing lead pose a health threat to more than half of the children in pre-kindergarten nursery schools in Bangkok, researchers said yesterday at a seminar by the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Centre.
The survey, conducted in 2010, found lead-based paint in the nursery schools run by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administra-tion, putting more than 50 per cent of the city's pre-kindergarten children at risk, centre director Assoc Prof Adisak Phalitpholkarn-phim said. He recommended that pre-kindergarten students undergo blood tests.
The production and sale of lead-based household paint should be more tightly regulated, the study urged.
Phetcharat Eksaengkul, head of the paint industry group, supported findings of the study, but said there should be stricter control on imports of raw materials that contain lead before clamping down on domestic paint production.
Young children are most vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can cause mental retardation. The World Health Organisation maintains that "no exposure to lead contamination, however small the level, is safe for children".

Search turns up more evidence at police doctor's ranch
The Nation

PHATCHABURI: -- In the presence of workers from Myanmar, police obtained key information during a search yesterday of the Phetchaburi ranch of a police doctor suspected of murdering a worker from the neighbouring country found buried on the property.
The search also turned up a rifle and other munitions owned by Pol Colonel Dr Suphat Laohawatthana. There were no details over whether the items were licensed. Suphat legally possesses a large number of firearms.
Brought to the ranch by police, a Myanmar worker named Kala pointed out locations where he claimed to have assisted Suphat in the shooting of the slain worker, Eta, and later with hiding his body. Kala said Suphat later ordered another Myanmar worker, a close friend named Tha Ngae, to shoot him, but Tha Ngae, not wanting to kill his friend, disabled a motorcycle as an excuse not to kill Kala.
Tha Ngae later secretly informed Kala of the death order from Suphat, the worker said, prompting him to go into hiding on a nearby plantation. He showed up a few days after news of Suphat's alleged crimes broke.
The chief of Tha Mai Ruak police in Phetchaburi, Pol Colonel Phichai Pokpong, said statements given to him by two Myanmar workers based in Tak province were very useful and would facilitate the obtaining of a court warrant permitting further excavation of Suphat's ranch. The statements would join those expected to be provided by other Myanmar workers concerning the location of several burial sites and reports of conflicts between Suphat and a couple - Samart Noomjui and his wife Orasa Kersab - who have been missing for two years.
Samart's father Sawang Noomjui yesterday gave information and additional evidence to Muang Phetchaburi police, before complaining that Tha Mai Ruak police had made little progress since he filed a missing-person complaint with them. He said it had taken three years from the time stories first emerged about activities at the ranch for any movement in the case to occur.

Rayong water supply hijacked by thieves
By Staff Reporter

RAYONG: -- A large district has water supply cut off by thieves
A large area within the Rayong district, South of Pattaya, saw both commercial and domestic water supplies dry up this week and investigators went to the pumping station, only to find that someone had been there before them, and cut the power supply cable, stealing 50 metres of valuable copper cable and, at the same time, rendering the whole pumping station useless.
Within the City, Schools along with Hospitals, shops businesses and homes were all without water, causing, in some cases the schools to close as they are all supplied by the new pumping station.
Avoiding the security guards, the thieves took a huge risk to steal the high voltage cables, a risk that has, in the past, proven fatal on numerous occasions and authorities are of the opinion that the criminals were not amateurs but instead, when found, will prove to be experienced electricians as the cables were live at the time when they were removed.

PHUKET: -- Fire broke out at Phuket’s Hard Rock Cafe on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road in Patong at about 9am today after a spark reportedly jumped from the iconic electric guitar neon sign and started the blaze.
No injuries have been reported so far. However, early estimates of the damage have been reported at about 6 million baht.
The fire was discovered by a security guard, who said he saw a spark leap from the big guitar neon sign that is known worldwide as the Hard Rock Cafe icon.
Twenty firefighters from the Patong Department Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Patong) branch arrived on seven fire trucks. It took the team about 20 minutes to put out the blaze.
The marquee sails and stage area in front of the building suffered extensive damage.
“Repairs may take up to two weeks. We have asked for permission from the police to continue trading inside the main building as it was entirely unaffected by the fire. We cannot afford to lose the 500,000 baht a night we make in trade,” said Sasichol Thangnak, director of sales and marketing.

Wat Arun demon loses head to lightning, sparks talk of ill omen
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Lightning has struck off the head of a sculpture of a 'yaksa' demon adorning the top of a pagoda at Wat Arun, one of Bangkok's most famous monasteries.
The Fine Arts Department was making urgent repairs and trying to dispel concerns that the falling head may be an ill omen.
"Don't interpret the incident. It's just an accident," department director-general Sahawat Naenna said yesterday.
He said it was fortunate that the falling head did not hurt anyone.
Sahawat said he had instructed officials to install a better lightning rod on the sculpture to prevent a recurrence of such a "shocking" incident.
Tarapong Srisuchart, who heads the department's Archaeology Bureau, said an electric current ran down the original lightning rod fixed above the head of the sculpture during a downpour last week.
"An explosion occurred and the head of the sculpture fell off," he said.
He said rods could be used to reattach the head to the neck of the sculpture, after which cement would be used to hold them together firmly.
"The process should be completed before the end of this month," Tarapong said.
Culture Minister Sukumol Kunplome inspected Wat Arun yesterday.
Earlier this year, the head and neck of a horse sculpture adorning another small pagoda at Wat Arun broke off. Sukumol said repairs to that statue were complete.
The ministry has prepared a Bt130-million budget for the restoration of Wat Arun between 2013 and 2015, she said.
"Two small pagodas and two surrounding mandapas [pavilions] there are in a dilapidated state," she said. "In fiscal 2013 we will have a Bt39.7-million budget to restore these structures."
She said the main pagoda and the landscape of the riverside temple would be renovated in 2014 and 2015 with a budget of Bt130 million.
Though constructed in the Ayutthaya period (1350-1767), Wat Arun or Wat Chaeng (The Temple of the Dawn) became the monastery inside King Taksin's palace during the Thon Buri period (1767-1782). Thailand's most famous Buddha statue, the Emerald Buddha, was once enshrined at Wat Arun.

Red Bull heir did 'coke' before accident
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Traces of cocaine were found in the blood of the Red Bull heir who ran a traffic-police officer over with his Ferrari this year.
The Thong Lor Police Station told the media yesterday that Vorayuth Yoovidhya, 27, the youngest son of Red Bull tycoon Chalerm Yoovidhya, did indeed have traces of cocaine in his blood as well as more alcohol than is permissible by law on the day of the accident.
Vorayuth was scheduled to make his way through the circus of reporters at the police station to hear his charges yesterday. Pol Lieutenant Akarawin Sukhonthawit, deputy commander and acting chief of the Thong Lor Police Station, said yesterday evening that though the suspect was supposed to show up in the afternoon, he had not been seen yet.
Akarawin said the suspect would have to explain to police why he could not show up, especially since he has postponed meetings with police several times already. If he failed to show up at the end of the day, police would consider confiscating the bail money and seeking an arrest warrant.
Police have also asked medical experts to verify how the use of cocaine can affect one's mental abilities, and said this latest discovery would lead to an additional charge against Vorayuth.

Huge drug haul up North; several held
The Nation

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, fourth from left, and National Police commissioner Pol General Adul Saengsingkaew, third left, announce the seizure of illicit drugs and the arrests of many drug suspects at a press conference
BANGKOK: -- Police have seized a total of 2.8 million amphetamine tablets and 31 kilograms of "ice" flakes, valued at more than Bt1 billion, and arrested several people for possessing or trafficking drugs.
The largest haul of 1.3 million amphetamine tablets took place at a checkpoint in Chiang Mai when three pickup trucks were pulled over. Though two vehicles tried to speed away, they were pursued and stopped, police said.
Another 794,000 tablets were seized in Bangkok's Bueng Kum district from a man who was trying to take them to the South. The suspect's initial confessions led to the arrest of another man, who admitted to dealing in drugs with inmates at the Nakhon Si Thammarat prison.
In a sting operation in Chiang Rai, police seized 30kg of ice flakes - a form of methamphetamine - along with 730,000 amphetamine tablets. The shipment, as part of a rendezvous, had been placed along a road and after several hours, a number of couriers showed up to claim the goods. A gunfight with police and soldiers ensued, resulting in the suspects jumping into the Ping River and swimming away.
Police are on the hunt for a Chiang Rai native nameed Sa sae-Thor, who is believed to be behind this exchange.
Police arrested another five suspects in Nakhon Pathom who admitted to selling drugs to inmates at the Samut Sakhon provincial prison. They also nabbed 10,000 tablets, six mobile phones, a pickup truck and two motorcycles that were allegedly used in illegal activities.
Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said up to 500 million amphetamine tablets were waiting to be smuggled into Thailand, but a team of police officers and soldiers were preparing to intercept the shipment.
He said the government was aiming to limit or stop the demand for drugs and as a result "no permits for night-entertainment venues to operate would be granted". He did not elaborate.
Chalerm added that a seminar aimed at raising awareness on drugs and further working out long-term solutions would be held on October 28 in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Paris Hilton coming to Thailand: God help us
By Coconuts Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- America’s (least) favorite burger-endorsing, sex-tape-making, pouty-lip-having reality TV star and hotel heiress Paris Hilton is coming to Thailand this week!
Or at least that’s what she said on her Facebook page.
Apparently there will be an “exciting event” coming soon too, the star told her nearly 1.5 million Facebook fans.
Could she be here to endorse Carl’s Jr. like she did in the US? Is she shooting some sort of reality show? Is she perhaps “designing” a luxury condo development like she did in Manila?

Street racers nabbed
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A 20-strong team from Bangkok's Vibhavadi Police Station rounded up 27 young street racers (21 males and six females) - eight of them minors - and seized 23 motorcycles at 3.45am yesterday in front of the 1st Infantry King's Own Bodyguard Regiment on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road.
Traffic Police inspector Pol Lt-Colonel Sanong Saengmanee said an investigation had found that the road was a favourite of street-racing youth, so police staged an ambush and rounded them up, bringing in some 20 trucks in which to haul away their motorbikes.
All of those arrested were first-time offenders. They will face the criminal charge of reckless motorbike-riding disturbing others, he said, adding that their parents might also be subject to charges of violating the Child Protection Act, which attracts a three-month jail term and/or a Bt30,000 fine.
Meanwhile, an informed source said Pol Senior Sgt-Major Kowit Saengkaew, 41, who was manning a checkpoint on Ratchadaphisek Road opposite the Queen Sirikit Conventional Centre, sustained a broken arm and a head wound after being hit by a motorcycle.
Driver Wichitchai Ketkaew, 25, and a 17-year-old female passenger were also injured. Police said the motorbike tried to run the checkpoint at high speed with its headlights switched off.

Policeman admits he was a drug mule

Pol Snr Sgt-Major Manas Suapho confessed to police yesterday that he worked as a drug deliveryman, which he said earned him a lot of money over the past two years.
Says he sometimes earned close to Bt2.2m for driving shipment to capital
BANGKOK: -- A junior police officer yesterday confessed to having delivered illicit narcotics for drug traffickers over the past two years, saying each delivery earned him about Bt1 million.
"Sometimes, I was paid as much as Bt2.2 million," Pol Snr Sgt-Major Manas Suapho told the police yesterday.
Manas, who works as a full-time police officer at the Bangkok-based Prachachuen Police Station, was speaking after he surrendered and promised to cooperate fully with the investigation.
The rogue officer initially went on the run after one of his accomplices, Thiti Pengsuk, was arrested on Sunday for possessing 1.28 million methamphetamine tablets and 5 kilograms of "ice" or crystal methamphetamine.
"All the money I earned from delivering drugs has gone into my house and my cars," he said.
Police have confiscated Manas's house, condo, four cars, gold jewellery, two motorcycles, land-title deeds as well as cash in his bank accounts. These assets were worth about Bt20.61million. Police also seized Bt4.8 million worth of assets from Thiti.
According to police records, more than Bt77 million has been seized from the drug gang Manas was allegedly involved with, including accomplices Sathit and Buakhai Saenglah, Prathin and Suchada Tuaipa, as well as Rapin and Suthep Khamfaeng.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said this was the first time that a policeman has been found involved in a big drug-trafficking case.
"We will take harsh action if any policemen are found involved in the drug trade. The supervisor will also face investigation to determine if he failed to properly oversee his subordinates," Chalerm said.
Police spokesman Maj-General Piya Uthayo said national police chief General Adul Saengsingkaew had ordered that supervisors be held responsible for negligence of duty.
However, Pol Lt-Colonel Narongchai Noisri, a deputy superintendent at the Prachachuen Police Station, said Manas had not demonstrated any suspicious behaviour.
"He did not seem to lead a luxurious lifestyle and even borrowed money from his colleagues. He also sought loans from a police cooperative and the Government Savings Bank," Narongchai said, adding that Manas usually rode a motorcycle to work.
"He drove a BMW sometimes, but when we asked him he said it belonged to a relative," Narongchai said.
Separately, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt-General Khamronwit Toopkrajang said he had instructed his deputy, Maj-General Thitiraj Nongharnpitak, to investigate this case carefully and try to nail down all culprits including the big boss of this major drug-trafficking network.
According to Manas, his colleague Prawin Tuaipa had talked him into delivering drugs.
"We used to take delivery orders from 'Je Pen', but we don't know her real name," Manas said, adding that he usually had to pick up drugs in Chiang Rai and drive the shipment down to Bangkok.
"The drugs came from a man called Hia Jai in Myanmar," Manas said, adding that he had never taken sick leave to make these deliveries. "I only did this during my free time," he said.

40 Transsexuals arrested by Pattaya Police in Beach Road sweep

PATTAYA:--In their never-ending quest to rid the streets of those suspected of either engaging or preparing to commit crimes and as they attempt to improve the image of Pattaya in preparation for a High Season which is expected to attract more families than ever before, Pattaya Police rounded-up 40 transsexuals who were caught roaming the streets in and around the South Pattaya entertainment zone in the early hours of Saturday.
The Police have identified these wandering transsexuals as the key group of potential trouble-makers and will now remove them fro the streets of Pattaya on a nightly basis until they are forced to either stop what they are doing, or to relocate, which is the more likely option.
Laws dictate that unless evidence is collated which proves they are involved in prostitution or other criminal acts they can only be fined for loitering which is what they were charged for on Saturday morning. 100 Baht fines were paid by each transsexual who was then released with a stern warning not to be seen in the area again.

Pattaya Ladyboys take over 260,000 Baht at local hotel
By Staff Reporter

Pattaya’s ladyboy community improving their image at fund raising event
PATTAYA: -- : With no police involved, over 40 Ladyboys, assisted by several foreigners are reported to have collected in excess of 260,000 baht and got wet in the process.
Pattaya’s Ladyboy community came together on Saturday afternoon at the Areca Lodge hotel in Soi Diana Inn, to participate in a water sports competition, raising money for two worthwhile local charities.
Teams from 8 bars competed for the Ladyboy Water Volleyball Championship under the guidance of the competition organiser, Englishman Tony Sales and, together with the evening event, raised over 260,000 Baht which was presented during the evening to the Local Rotary club’s water purification programme for remote villages in Thailand and to Pattaya orphanage.
Tickets for the event were totally sold out well in advance and, in a city where the Ladyboy image is often tarnished by grubby street thieves, the promoters of the event were excited to be able to display the other side of life with the third gender.
This, the very first of such events, is expected to become a regular feature in the city.
After the fun and games of the water volleyball, the teams retired, obviously to the hairdressers, before re-appearing at a ticket only, banquet in the evening, now dressed to the nines with newly fashioned hair and makeup.

Pattaya: Soi LK Metro sees knife attack and violence on Sunday night
A reported fight in Soi LK Metro on Sunday night left barkeepers and customers stunned as the violence escalated into the street outside the Billabong bar, in full view of passing pedestrians and customer of adjacent bars.
Normally a safe, if non sedate, area of the city, Soi LK Metro is adjacent to Soi Diana Inn and Soi Buakau where Sunday evening antics are usually restricted to the odd drunk and a parade of pretty girls, So this night’s event shook the community.
According to witnesses at the scene, the fight, which took place on the corner outside the Billabong bar, was between two local nationals and quickly turned from an argument to a knife wielding fight.
One man is reported to have had his throat cut and received multiple stab wounds, being left in the street which was described as “awash with blood”, (this according to two witnesses from the nearby Rock House.)

Thailand Theme Park Continues to Host Orangutan Kickboxing Matches
BY AUDREY HAYNES
Endangered primates still exploited for amusement despite years of protests by animal welfare activists and anti-trafficking crackdowns
BANGKOK: -- I recently found out that Safari World, an animal theme park on the outskirts of Bangkok, hosts orangutan kickboxing matches. Captive orangutans, dressed in lurid satin shorts and boxing gloves, kick and punch each other until there is a knockout.
The performances even feature female orangutans in bikinis holding up the round number. The matches last more than 30 minutes, after which the orangutans are returned to their dark cages. Video footage of the park shows tourists cheering the grotesque display.
Safari World insists that the orangutans are trained to pretend punch and feign knock-outs, however, animal rights activists say that the large animals could easily injure one another.
“The use of endangered species for sport and entertainment is appalling. These critically endangered orangutans do not exist for our entertainment; local indigenous populations should know this, and tourists must be sensitive to this. We as a species and global population did not develop to exploit animals for amusement,” Michael Muehlenbein, professor of anthropology at Indiana University told me via email.
Muehlenbein has spent a lot of time in Borneo studying primate disease ecology and the potential negative effects of interactions between humans and wild animals.

Immunity for Thai senator who shot ex-wife
BANGKOK, Oct 22, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand's Senate on Monday voted to deny a request by the police to question one of its members who shot his ex-wife at the dinner table with an Uzi 9mm pistol.
Upper house lawmakers voted 94-2 to uphold Boonsong Kowawisarat's constitutional right to immunity during the parliamentary session.
"After the session ends on November 28 police can take him for questioning," Senator Somchai Sawaengkarn told AFP. "A senator should do his job during a parliamentary session."
Boonsong has said the death was an accident caused by ill health following a stroke. He said the gun went off while he was trying to remove a jammed bullet, fatally wounding Chanakarn Detkard, 46, who was also his secretary.
Police said Boonsong, who is the representative for northern Mae Hong Son province, is likely to be charged with causing death by negligence.
If convicted, he faces a maximum punishment of 10 years' imprisonment and a 20,000 baht ($670) fine.
Under the constitution, a lawmaker cannot be arrested, detained or summoned as a suspect in a criminal inquiry during a parliamentary session without permission from the house.
